Have you all tried both of the installers linked in post #24? Please try both and see if either works for you.

Hey Ryan, I missed this message before my last post which just said the latest installer had the same issue. Sorry for ignoring your request for the logs. I'll go through this again for you.
1. I located both folders you mentioned and renamed them, then followed the steps while installing FGU to a new folder.
2. I downloaded from the link Moon Wizard posted (comment #32) from https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filel...WebInstall.exe
3. I installed to: "C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU" and the data to "C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU\FGU Data".
4. I chose to create the start menu and desktop shortcuts. After install it opened the updater which crashed as usual.
5. The resulting folder looked like this: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/cad965/explorer and that data folder looks like: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/9fd3f4/explorer
Note that FantasyGrounds.exe is missing
It did NOT create a new appdata/roaming folder: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/74d0f6/explorer
It did NOT create a new program files folder: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/920f11/explorer
It did NOT create a log file in the new install directory.
9. I tried running the FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe from that new install directory. It still crashed, but this time it DID create a log file. Nothing useful though: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/334d4b/
No luck with that version, but see below
To be clear the entire time the updater program is the one crashing. The installer appears to work but as I noted in the original post, it seems that a couple executables were not getting created.
That link is the same as the above that I walked through for Ryan, so refer to the above
I did not try this previous version and assumed it was the same installer I used to begin with. I gave this a try though, same as all other attempts:
1. I downloaded the file from https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filel...nstallPrev.exe
2. I installed to C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU2 and data to C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU2\FGU Data, and created both shortcuts
3. I notice after installing and clicking the close button, it did not automatically open the updater. Or if it did, it didn't create a window. Other versions create a window that crashes after 2 seconds. No appdata folder was created.
4. The install folder now looks like this: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/3d15d7/explorer - note there is no log file
5. This installer actually appears to be working and shows version v4.0.0 which is different than my first attempt which showed v0.33: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/6a0524/fgupdaterengine
6. I was able to add my license key (although it claimed it was invalid) and my login credentials, save and restart.
It looks like the "previous" installer is working!
Although the "previous" installer has a different version number (v4.0.0) from the first one I used (v0.33) before it crashed. See first post for that.
I am successfully updating now. It still says my license key is invalid, but that's a different issue.
Thanks for all the help!

Thanks everyone for the detailed info.
So, what I know so far/what I can tell you. I'll be a bit verbose on the functionality of the app so people can see what's going on in the background here.
First, the latest installer changes are really only meant to prompt installation of the Visual C++ redistributable for users who don't have an appropriate version installed. That's the reason for the installer size change, and the prompting seems to be mostly working.
We also added an error for users trying to run the installer on a 32 bit machine. These are really the only changes made recently to the installer, but it's possible something about the logic is a problem.
As for FantasyGrounds.exe not existing after install: This is as intended. To keep the installer size down (and since almost always, Fantasy Grounds will have to immediately update anyway, since we make frequent changes), we don't actually include Fantasy Grounds in the installer.
The installer should really only be including the updater.
The updater itself is actually 2 programs: FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe (.app for mac), and FGUpdaterEngine.
FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe primarily exists to request admin permission for access to the program files directory (still asks even if you don't install to PF), and then it launches FGUpdaterEngine/FGUpdaterEngine.exe (which is a Unity app)/
If FGUpdaterEngine has an update for the updater, then it is meant to write those files to FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW, back up FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe to FantasyGroundsUpdater_OLD.exe, which then copies all the new updater files. By the time the updater is updated and we are back in the main updater application (FGUpdaterEngine), it should be clearing out both the FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW folder and FantasyGroundsUpdater_OLD.exe
Now, as for why we're seeing these strange updater bugs. The v0.33 is an indication that the bulk of the updater code is not hit (since that 4.0.0 is updated programatically quite early).
Being that the app is crashing before any of this is updating, it seems that *Something* that the Unity needs is not being installed correctly for some users.
For this, I think we need to introduce one more log file, especially since this seems to only be some users.
There is a Unity created log file located at
C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\SmiteWorks\FGUp daterEngine\Player.log
Edited:
I'd appreciate it if someone with the crashing issue could email their player log to [email protected] for me to review. Hopefully this should give us information about the missing files, or whatever else might be going on here.Last edited by ddavison; February 17th, 2020 at 18:10.

Please don't post the player log here since it contains your license key and username info. You can email it directly to Ryan or to [email protected] instead.

Installing with the older installer fixed the issues for me.

Hey Folks, Ryan again!
I've made another installer build I'm hoping will help with some of these issues.
You can find the latest Windows build here.
I've also made a stickied post that's a bit more in depth version of what I've posted above.
Please feel free to direct further questions there as this is an ongoing issue.

I did see that installer pop up on my first attempts, but not the updated installers. It would ask me to install and then the options in VC++ only gave me "Repair" or "Cancel" because it was already installed. I think that's installed by default in Windows 10 now anyway? It does not pop up anymore so I think that's fixed.
Hi Ryan, I tried your installer in a new folder again. It did not open the updater immediately after install, not sure if that is a bug or intended. I ran "FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe" manually from the install path, and it opened the v4.0.0 version. I think this one is working, too, other than not automatically updating after install.
Here is my player.log file (I checked, it does not contain license or login info):

Literally posted about this yesterday as well.
Glad to see there's a workaround.Last edited by Arcane_Firaga; February 18th, 2020 at 04:50.
