---
Hey all! So hear me out. I've been inspired from a couple anime I've watched.
The first component is that my character, mentally (and probably physically) would be the real life isekai'd version of myself. Omitting any knowledge of Dungeons & Dragons. So, I would recognize that I've been reborn, and I would recognize fantasy concepts such as magic and other races. But I wouldn't specifically recognize that I'm in D&D. It would be my actual real life self, just boom, in another world.
As for the mechanics part. Again, being heavily inspired from a couple anime. One anime, the MC had the ability to sense hostile intent, and he could just instantly kill anyone he sensed that intent from, or anyone he could see. Now obviously, making this work for D&D with other real players would probably be a bit much. But another anime, the MC could do basically the same thing, except it was a paralyze/poison combo. So I'm thinking it'd be a combo of the two... sensing hostile intent, and the paralyze ability. That way it's not quite as much overpowered. But obviously it's still overpowered.
Oh, I would also omit knowledge of the specific anime I'm taking these abilities from... trying to avoid TOO much meta, haha.
I should mention here that I also want to try having my character, aside from this ability, just being a normal commoner. No class. He's just me, dropped into the world. A guy with 10 HP. So I'd certainly be vulnerable to a lot.
But yes, it would effectively remove almost all challenge from the game. BUT! It would make it far more focused on story. And I think that'd be really interesting. It worked in the anime, at least. It ultimately becomes, what will the group do with this ultimate power?
And yes, I would prefer it to just straight up be a completely busted power. No saves, no limitations... it just works, at will. Maybe I have to say "Paralyze" but that's it.
Obviously a big concern of mine is having it be fun for the other players as well. The way I see it going down, my character would mostly be a really weak VIP escort.
So yeah! I know this concept is way out there but I think it'd be different and fun!
Let me know what you all think!Last edited by Varlun; September 22nd, 2024 at 10:12.

Let's see if I get this right, you want a character that at level 1, can use Power Word Kill a level 9 spell as an ability, useable without a cooldown or limit... in a group that didn't really need to fight any monsters because you can kill anything, and their only job was to escort you while you try to get home?

I think your best bet is to find an AI DM (ChatGPT or something similar to bounce ideas off) that can do all of this for you (or post a vlog to just tell people your character's story, not an RPG.) Maybe a paid GM that will run just for you as this concept is antithetical party based games and to RPG games in general (except maybe full on comic book superhero type game). Basically, it sounds you want a character that is able to just go around and do what he/she/it wants to do with the setting having no bearing on the character's actions. This is one of the reasons I try to avoid players so steeped in anime and stopped playing 5E, as most of the players I come across just want a game with no repercussions to their characters' actions. They care nothing for mechanical character development (or even RP development) as their character can already do everything they want it to do with little, to no, limits. Makes for a very boring game (and frustrating for the DM and other players) imho. The DM is also a player, what you are wanting basically makes the DM an unneeded hindrance to your story. You do not need a DM or other party members to do what you are wanting.

Mechanically speaking, there is no difference between unconditionally paralyzing an enemy and outright killing it, except for the amount of time it takes to kill a paralyzed enemy.
Another option for what you are wanting is a writers forum where you can create a story for you character collaboratively, with no restraints from a game system. Something closer to how tv shows are written with a team of writers.

You're making a lot of disingenuous assumptions. I do not want to play with an AI, and I do not want to write my own story. I want to play with a group of people. I already said a lot of these caveats, in anticipation of people such as yourself. You're clearly closed minded to anything that's a little different, especially with your little insult towards people who enjoy anime. I'm not going to waste any further time on you.

But if you can just paralyze anything, no saves as you say, whats the point? Where is the fun for the other players, and the GM? The only challenge option would be for the GM to gain surprise. Where is the fun in just escorting someone, ie you, who is the VIP, the main character. Its okay in an anime, as you have a main character and their sidekicks/escorts/etc, but it does not seem to make for an interesting rpg game, unless you were playing one on one with the GM.

The point- again as I mentioned in the original post- is the story that comes out of it. As with any other creative character choices, it's up to the DM to come up with stories and situations that suit the involved characters. The first thing that comes to *my* mind is a mostly political story, where simply paralyzing every opponent may not be the wisest course of action, and may have dire consequences. Of course, monsters would have no consequence as nobody will care. But humans- when word gets out that there's someone with such a devastating and terrifying ability, that's going to draw some attention. And it's up to the DM to create an interesting story on that premise. Is it something a bit unusual? Yes. Is it out of the realm of possibility to make work? I think not. Those are just *my* ideas, as well- and I'm not a creative story writer. I actually did try DMing myself, and I couldn't do it. A creative DM should have no trouble making this work.

Group adventure begins....DM sets the story and the stage for the players in the Tavern...They set off on an adventure working well together and getting along.
**POP**
Varlun appears with the party.
Group adventure dissolves as players quit due to not having to do anything because of the paralyzing beam wielding immortal that joined up with them and makes roleplaying no fun.
