I am no investor-ologist, so feel free to chime in smarter people, but I suspect this was a sacrifice to the bloody standard of showing Growth to shareholders.
They had promised shareholders results [*Line Will Go Up*] from their new licensing agreements, and since they already blew their own foot off walking everything back in all that drama last year, they can only show Growth by cutting costs on the same ledger.

On top of that, I would not be surprised if their investor communications feature a lot of glitz and glamor about generative AI assets and roadmaps.

I suspect we're going to see a lot of companies wielding AI knives in a rush to cut their noses off to spite their faces this year.
