I'll also mention that the community as a whole is better than what I have seen on Roll20. Plus Roll20 actively removes ANY mention (even good comparisons) to any type of competition from their forums. This discussion could NOT happen in their forums.

Actually Fantasy ground after 3 years can be a lot cheaper the r20. There is a video on Youtube called "Roll20 Vs Fantasy Grounds | Which is REALLY the Cheapest?" that lays it out very nicely. It does cover a lot of different scenarios, including some where a just player user would prefer r20.
About it only being on your computer, use a cloud storage system like one drive. As long s your data is to large it is free.

Go for FG Unity and change to 5e. I don't understand why you want to play 4e that is not much supported as it was really a failure of edition
