wondering if there was any word on a sale ?

There always has been.

SmiteWorks never gives pre-announcements of sales.
That said, historically and for as long as I can remember, they have always participated in the Steam Summer and Winter Sales, as well as a Black Friday sale.
Note their are items on sale every week, signup for the Newsletter so you are aware of all sales.

I am new to FG, but have bought FGU Ultiamte and loving it. Is there also a Holiday sale near the end of December, or does FG typically focus on Black Friday/Cyber monday?
