Making your own magic items: is there any way to . . .
. . . do this without having purchased the DMG?

Certainly is. Wiki link.

One thing which isn't clear from the wiki article is that if you are creating a magic item then give it the 'magic' property. Thus if if is a weapon for example when it is equipped FG will recognise it as magical and apply magic damage for the purposes of determining whether the damage is affected by immunities and resistances.
If there is something that you would like to see in Fantasy Grounds that isn't currently part of the software or if there is something you think would improve a ruleset then add your idea here https://www.fantasygrounds.com/featu...rerequests.php

Drag a weapon in to items and edit it.

But what that article says is that the magic item templates are only available from the DMG

Nevermind. It appears you can get them from the SRD

Indeed the templates are in the SRD, but you don't need them to make magic items. You can do that by creating items in the items dialog or by editing existing items to give them magical properties.

Just edit the items directly.

I am creating a magical wand with limited lifetime charges, what is the syntax to create such an item? And while we are at it, is there a different syntax for daily uses, as apposed to total lifetime uses - IE: this wand has a total of 75 uses before it crumbles to dust. I am thinking that there might be some kind of 'ammo used' check boxes (similar to arrows used), so the player using the wand might be able to see how many lifetime charges remain.
The standard nomenclature of a magical wand reads something like: This wand has 7 charges. While holding it, you may us an action to expend 1 or more of it's charges to cast (insert spell here) spell from it. For 1 charger, may cast the 1st-level version of the spell. You can increase the spell slot level by one for each additional charge you expend. The wand regains 1d6+1 expended charges daily at dawn... etc. etc.
Fine for a daily recharging wand - but for a wand with a finite number of charges, not helpful. I am thinking along similar lines - 7-10 charges can be expended in 24 hours (next dawn) BUT, the number of possible recharging cycles is fixed to 75 total, or whatever number I decide. Thus, the feared natural 20 (wand crumbles to dust) on the recharges (dawn) roll is replaced with a certainty once the lifetime charges have been used.
Suggestions?

The only way that you can track useage is via preparation mode. If you want a finite number of charges set the period to 'Once'. 'Rest' recovers on a short rest and 'Daily' recovers on a long rest.
So for your need create an action with whatever spell or whatever it does and then set the charges in preparation mode.
EDIT: You can also set the number of uses in the dialog accessed from clicking on the magnifying glass on the action header. Same principle as above.Last edited by Zacchaeus; December 3rd, 2018 at 20:39.
