As I mentioned above, FG just puts the token image on the map (and does some scaling). I'm not aware of any way to change the token appearance programmatically (apply a mask to make the visible portion hexagonal, for example).

If I remember right, there are Themes that crop the portraits to a shape. This might be what you are thinking of.

No.. it was definitely the tokens.. but maybe someone just had some odd design ideas for their tokens... frustrating.
One of those times when I'm hoping that Trenloe is mistaken.

There has been a couple of external applications that download D&D and Pathfinder mini images from the WotC and Paizo websites and make tokens:

I think it is these that you are confusing with extensions.

How many tokens are you looking to punch?

Every token that is created in the ruleset... which is why it'd be better if the ruleset was able to do it on it's own. I can see why someone might not want that... but.. for the design.. it works better if they are all HEX.

I'll go back to my other plan of somehow getting the PC code to work for NPCs.

In general you can do tokens in any shape with Photoshop or GIMP. You define the out edges of the token (leave the outside transparent), then define an inner area (as a mask that marks the images you put in there). Then you can quite easily generate lots and lots of tokens.

I love those tokens. I am not a fan of top down, I like the more portraity look. Do you know where I can download some?

Look for portraits from Pillars of Eternity, lots of folks made sets for the game.
Then Token tool to grab and make.

As most are the same size very quick to make a set, personal use other, disclaimer, of course.

These days I am sure you can get sued for using your own art work.

Honestly, my goal was/is to make it simple so that any square image can be used as a token portrait without going through some other sort of token processor.
